TY Students Return from Italy with Stories, Laughter, and Lifelong Memories
After speaking with Transition Year students Faye McGrath, Katie Myers, Josh Kelly and Liam McCrea, it was impossible not to be swept up in their enthusiasm as they recounted their recent trip to Italy. Their excitement was infectious, and it’s clear the experience left a lasting impression.
Pisa and Florence – Iconic Sights and Skyline Views
The adventure began in Pisa, where students snapped the classic Leaning Tower photos and browsed the vibrant local markets. “Walking through the market-lined streets to the tower was a brilliant way to start the trip,” Josh shared.
Florence brought both challenge and reward, as the group climbed the 463 steps to the top of the Duomo. “The view from the top was definitely worth it,” Liam said, reflecting on the breathtaking panorama of the Renaissance city.
Verona, Lake Garda, and Mount Baldo – Shakespeare and Stunning Scenery
Next, the group travelled to Verona, a city steeped in history and romance. They explored the Roman amphitheatre, one of the best-preserved ancient arenas in the world, still used today for operatic performances and concerts – a true testament to the engineering genius of the ancient Romans.
They also visited Juliet’s balcony, a popular tourist attraction inspired by Shakespeare’s great tragedy, Romeo and Juliet. While the balcony itself is a modern addition, it draws thousands of visitors each year, captivated by the enduring tale of star-crossed lovers. “It was amazing to stand in the spot made famous by Shakespeare,” Katie said, capturing the sense of literary history.
The magic continued on the waters of Lake Garda, where students enjoyed a scenic boat tour, and then scaled the heights of Mount Baldo, taking in the jaw-dropping views from this stunning peak. “It was like something out of a film,” Faye added, capturing the sense of adventure.
Gardaland – Pure Adrenaline
For thrill-seekers, Gardaland was a clear favourite. “It was massive – full of adrenaline-pumping rides and great fun,” said Josh, recalling the excitement of one of Italy’s largest theme parks.
Venice – Like Stepping Back in Time
The final stop was Venice, where students wandered the narrow canals, took iconic gondola rides, and even encountered opera singers performing on the water. “It felt like we’d stepped back in time,” Faye reflected. She added, “It was the best trip of my life – it’s like a dream now.”
The students returned home with cherished memories, new friendships, and a deeper appreciation for Italian history and culture. When asked if they’d go again, the answer was a resounding yes.
A heartfelt thank you to the teachers who made this unforgettable journey possible – Ms Mary Cummins, Ms Balfe, Ms Vania Power, Mr Fogarty, and Mr Keogh.
